An engineer at Ford has prototyped a shifter that tells newbie manual drivers when to shift gears. Tapping into Ford’s OpenXC, which is an open source platform that allows people with smart phones to connect to real-time vehicle data, the device delivers a haptic pulse that lets the user know that they should shift. The input can definitely change – the video below outlines an option for how this can also become a shifter that tells you when to let off the gas for greater fuel efficiency. Not bad for something scrapped together with a 3D-printed know, Arduino controller, and LED display.
